  1. 製作、準備。來源於中藥材嘅加工方法,以消除毒性、減輕藥力,或方便儲藏等,有鍛、炮、蒸、煮、焙、炙、洗、泡等十多種手法。如炮法係放入高温鐵鑊大火急炒至焦黃乾裂,例如炮薑;泡法就係放入滾水中淥熟以清除表皮。因此亦有人寫成泡製。
  2. 比喻作嚴厲懲罰、教訓某人,暗示會體罰、酷刑等,以前會用於威嚇,但現時使用已多數帶玩笑意味。源於製作藥材工序令人聯想到各種酷刑,如炮烙、水刑等。
